Aranis
Aranis is a young Flemish septet with Joris
Vanvinckenroye on double bass, Linde De Groof on violin and
vocals, Liesbeth Lambrecht on violin, Marjolijn Cools on accordion,
Axelle Kennes on piano, Stijn Denys on guitar, Jana Arns on
flute and vocals, with guest Edwin Vanvinckenroye on violin,
vocals, and Dick Van Der Harst on selmer guitar.
They alternate personal compositions with improvisation and
intense solo performances. It's very hard to define the type
of music Aranis brings. Acoustic/classic instruments are played
in an unusual fashion. Aranis has taken the best parts of
contemporary classical music, postrock and folk. Often compositions
have a typical repetitive structure, which has a compelling
and even flushing effect on the audience The cinematic nature
and strange rhythms of this music create a lasting impression.
The atmosphere during the concerts is inimitable: passion,
expressiveness and variation always play a key role.

"...the soundtrack
to a surreal black and white movie. Full of unexpected twist
and turns...the whole album is a wonderfully expressive delight,
the music complex, soothing, magical..." - Ptolemaic
Terrascope |
|
"...has a unique
operatic passion and intensity that cannot be ignored..."
- Side-line |
| "...an excellent
and exciting album that should not be skipped by lovers of
experimental music, contemporary classical, and crossover
genres." - Evening
of Light |
| "These compositions
exhibit remarkable verve for 'classical music'...The idyllic
tunes seethe with a soft undercurrent of drama that can be
quite enthralling." - Sonic
Curiosity |
| .."Een schitterend
en origineel album van een band waar we zeker nog van gaan
horen!" - Dark
Entries |
| "...classically-trained
musicians with guts. On CD and on stage, these guts sound
like thrilling soundtracks à la Sigur Ros and swinging
folk. Or chamber music with balls..." - Zone 09 |
| "..dramatic
and passionate, stirring and dreamy at the same time..."
- De Bond |
| "A touch of melancholy,
sometimes sober, others like a whirlwind of sounds."
- De Zondag |
| "The cinematic
style of Joris Vanvinckenroye shifts from explosive chunks
of music to a muted minimalism. In his head, Astor Piazolla
lives next door to John Cale and Jethro Tull. Their little
get-togethers never feel contrived..." - De Tijd |
| "Unknown and
far too unloved, yet with a great deal of class...Aranis brings
its very own sound that is apparently enjoyed by various authorities
... Wherever the ensemble performs, positive reactions is
all you hear ..." -Stage |
| "...it is quite
clear that Aranis wants to make music you do not hear just
anywhere. Still, the small venue at ‘De Vieze Gasten’
is pretty packed for this Flemish band ... This band is intriguing."
